Open vented cylinder systems are ideal for providing heating and hot water simultaneously, which is why they make a popular choice for families. The cylinder is referred to as being ‘vented’ as it has a vent pipe running to a cold water storage cistern or tank which is usually located in the loft of a house.
Water expands as it heats up, therefore when the cylinder is full, the heated water runs through the vent pipe and into the storage cistern. When the water cools and contracts, it is then able to run from a pipe back into the cylinder, creating a simple loop.
When more water is required, it is fed into the cylinder via a level system in the cistern which allows the system to be topped up to the correct level.

"After discovering the bottom part of some of my radiators were never getting warm, I rang Viva Gas for some advice. They were very helpful and sent out an engineer straight away who power flushed my central heating system. It’s now working like it is brand new." - Mrs Swallow
